It was first synthesized in the 1940s but did not become commercially available until the 1950s. It is used as an organic solvent in cellulose acetate and xylene production. 1,2,4,5-Tetrafluoro-3,6-dimethylbenzene has been shown to be resistant to water vapor and has a low viscosity at room temperature.
