Undecanenitrile is an aliphatic hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C12H24. It is a colorless liquid that has a melting point of -5.5°C and boiling point of 115°C. Undecanenitrile is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of dodecanedioic acid and amide, which are used to produce citric and trifluoroacetic acid, respectively. The reaction mechanism for the reduction of undecanenitrile with chlorine atom involves the formation of a cyclohexadienyl radical that reacts with oxygen to form a cyclohexene oxide species. This species then reacts with hydrogen chloride to form hydrochloric acid.
The reduction product can be separated from other products by chromatographic methods such as gas chromatography or high-performance liquid chromatography.
