Viloxazine is a tricyclic antidepressant drug used to treat depression and anxiety disorders. It has been shown to increase the release of neurotrophic factors, such as nerve growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor. Viloxazine also possesses agonistic properties at serotonin receptors, which are involved in the modulation of mood and cognitive function. In addition, viloxazine has been shown to have clinical efficacy in patients with bowel disease. Viloxazine is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and eliminated by hepatic metabolism. The blood concentration of viloxazine reaches its maximum level within 2 hours following oral administration. The half-life of viloxazine is about 1 hour. Viloxazine is mainly metabolized via CYP2D6 (cytochrome P450) to 3-hydroxyviloxazine and 4'-hydroxymethylviloxazine.
