5-Aminothiazole-2-thiol is an organic compound that contains sulfur. It is a five-membered heterocyclic compound containing a thiazole ring with a methyl substituent at the 2 position and a thiol group at the 5 position. 5-Aminothiazole-2-thiol is used in the preparation of vitamin B2, riboflavin. This chemical has also been shown to be an inhibitor of alloxan, an agent that produces reactive oxygen species and damages cells.
5-Aminothiazole-2-thiol can be synthesized by reacting carbon compounds with alloxazine, which is also known as 5-(aminomethyl)thiophene or 5-(aminomethyl)thiohydantoin.
