5-Mercapto-1-methyl-4-nitroimidazole is a metabolite of imidazole, an organic compound with a five-membered ring. It is produced by the oxidation of 5-mercapto-1-methyl-4-nitroimidazole and can be used to study the metabolic pathways of this class of compounds. The acidic nature of 5MMN has been shown in liquid chromatography experiments which have found that it can be taken up by cells through passive transport mechanisms. It has also been shown to be metabolized into other chemical substances, such as thioimidazole and imidazole derivatives.
