2-(Methylsulfanyl)benzonitrile is a haemonchus introduction that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is also capable of modifying the alkali metal chloride to form a dichroic species, which can be used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of nitro groups. The functional theory of carboxylic acids, which is widely accepted in organic chemistry, can be applied to this molecule, which undergoes an electrophilic substitution reaction with chloride or bromide ion. 2-(Methylsulfanyl)benzonitrile has antimycotic properties and can inhibit the growth of fungi such as Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
2-(Methylsulfanyl)benzonitrile is not toxic to mammals and birds because it does not affect the liver, kidney or central nervous system.
