N-Cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone is a solvent that has been shown to be chemically stable and not toxic to humans. It is used in a variety of industries, including the textile industry, as a degreaser, and in the production of polyurethane. This chemical has also been shown to have an optimum concentration for use in polymerization reactions. The mechanism of N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone is thought to be due to hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl group on one molecule and the carbonyl group on another, forming a diphenyl ether linkage. The reaction proceeds by an organic acid acting as an oxidizing agent and producing an inorganic acid as a byproduct. N-Cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone can also react with light via photolysis, causing it to decompose into formaldehyde and water.
