4-(2-Fluoroethoxy)phenylboronic acid is a potent inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that break down the extracellular matrix. It has been shown to inhibit MMP-1 and MMP-3 in vitro, and has shown potential for use as a therapeutic agent for pathologies involving excess or inappropriate activation of these enzymes. 4-(2-Fluoroethoxy)phenylboronic acid was also found to be a potent inhibitor of MMP-9, but not of TIMP-1. This compound can be used to develop positron emission tomography imaging agents for noninvasive diagnosis of matrix metalloproteinase activity in vivo, as well as inhibitors for these enzymes.
