Methyl 2-hydroxytetradecanoate is a natural product that is water-soluble. It is a precursor of hydrogen peroxide, which is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) that has been implicated in oxidative stress and the etiology of several diseases. Methyl 2-hydroxytetradecanoate also acts as an antioxidant by reducing ROS to H2O2, which then reacts with molecular oxygen to form water. This compound has been found in the starfish Asterias and can also be found in cerebroside, which is a type of lipid molecule. It plays an important role as a substrate for glutathione peroxidase (GPx), which catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide to water.
