3-Hydroxypropyl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (3HPMBS) is a homologous reagent that can be used for the synthesis of nucleophilic amines. It reacts with amines to form sulfonamides and alkyl halides, respectively. 3HPMBS is good for labeling DNA because it will react with the phosphate group in DNA during the elution process. The reaction sequence can be optimized by changing the order of addition or conditions such as temperature, pH, or solvent. 3HPMBS has been shown to provide high yields and sequences that are easy to purify.
