Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits cell growth by binding to bacterial ribosomes and preventing the initiation of protein synthesis. Ciprofloxacin is administered orally, intravenously, or intramuscularly. The drug is metabolized in the body by cytochrome P450 enzymes to form an active metabolite that binds to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes necessary for bacterial replication. Ciprofloxacin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
