CBiPES hydrochloride is a prodrug that is metabolized to ciprofloxacin. It is used for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, such as depression and anxiety. CBiPES hydrochloride has also been shown to be effective in attenuating the symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and reducing the risk of relapse in bipolar disorder. The exact mechanism by which CBiPES hydrochloride acts is not known, but it may work by modulating glutamate neurotransmission, or by stimulating serotonin receptors on neurons. This agent has also been studied for its possible use in treating autism spectrum disorders and depression.
