2-Hydroxy-3-isopropylbenzoic acid (2HIBA) is an organic compound that is a divalent ion. It has been shown to be more efficient in ion exchange than salicylic acid, which is the traditional reagent for the conversion of phenols to their corresponding acids. The affinity of 2HIBA for cationic and anionic sites on the resin surface provide controllability, which can be further enhanced by using monovalent ions such as ammonium or sodium. Mechanistic studies have demonstrated that 2HIBA is able to convert phenol into benzoic acid via a radical mechanism with hydrogen peroxide as a catalyst. 2HIBA has also been found to induce synergistic effects with other compounds such as salicylic acid when they are used together in an experimentally set up system.
