5-Phenoxyvaleric Acid (5PA) is an amide that has been shown to be a substrate for the biotransformations of filamentous fungi. It can be produced by the demethylation of valeric acid or by the epoxidation of 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene. 5PA has been shown to have a high cholesterol lowering effect in rats and is used as an additive in foods. 5PA has also been used in biochemical studies as a substrate for amide and azaarenes.
