- 2,4-Bis(Benzyloxy)Pyrimidine
2,4-Bis(benzyloxy)pyrimidine (2,4-BPP) is an analog of the pyrimidine nucleosides that can be used as a prebiotic. This compound has been shown to have catalysis activity for glycosidation reactions and for the demethylation of benzyl alcohols. 2,4-BPP has also been used in x-ray diffraction studies to investigate its structure. The crystal structure of 2,4-BPP was determined by x-ray diffraction and was found to have a coordination geometry that is typical for phosphine ligands. The prebiotic activity of 2,4-BPP was demonstrated in experiments with mice that showed that it could stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium animalis.
