1,2-Epoxyoctadecane is a molecule that has a chemical composition of C18H38O4. It is synthesized by reacting epichlorohydrin with octadecanedioic acid in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction mechanism involves the nucleophilic attack of the hydroxyl group on the carbonyl carbon, followed by ring opening and addition reactions. Gadolinium ions are cationic surfactants that have been shown to bind to 1,2-epoxyoctadecane at physiological pHs and form aggregates. This binding leads to an increase in transport properties such as solubility in water and human serum. 1,2-Epoxyoctadecane also reacts with chloride ions to form epoxide products or fatty acids, which can be used for synthetic purposes.
