p-Benzanisidide is a nitro, diazo compound that has an acidic structure. It is used as an antidiabetic drug and has been shown to have efficiencies in the range of 50-100%. The drug binds to the active site of the enzyme by means of a hydrogen bond with its carbonyl group. This forms a bound form which cannot be activated. p-Benzanisidide has also been shown to bind to x-ray crystal structures of human liver enzymes and inhibit their activity. p-Benzanisidide is not toxic to cells in vitro, but it may be toxic when inhaled or orally ingested because it reacts with water and generates nitrite ions, which can cause severe acidosis.
