Platinum(II) iodide is an activated metal catalyst that can be used with a wide range of cocatalysts, including germanium and palladium. It is used as an oxidizing agent in the oxidative carbonylation of alkenes to produce alcohols. The type of solvent used in this reaction system has a significant effect on the selectivity and yield of the reaction. Platinum(II) iodide can also be used as a reducing agent for amines to form diamines. Platinum(II) iodide is not soluble in water, but it does dissolve in nonpolar solvents such as ether, benzene, and chloroform.
