N,N,N',N'-Tetraethylmalonamide (TEAMA) is a ligand that has a high affinity for metal ions. It is used in pharmacological research as a potent inhibitor of acetonitrile and oxychloride, which are enzymes involved in the synthesis of fatty acids. TEAMA also has an effect on the central nervous system and can depress some activities such as locomotion and breathing. This ligand binds to metal ions by coordinating with four oxygen atoms from the malonic acid groups. The complex can be formed reversibly or irreversibly depending on the pH level. The x-ray absorption spectroscopy data collected shows that TEAMA binds to lanthanide ions more strongly than other metal ions. Diffraction data collected using single-crystal x-ray diffraction confirms that TEAMA binds to lanthanides most strongly, followed by phosphorus oxychloride, titanium and then iron.
