Demethylpiperazinyl Sildenafil Sulfonic Acid is a prodrug of sildenafil, which is an organic compound. It is used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. This drug is metabolized by hydrolysis to form sildenafil citrate, which then acts as an inhibitor of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). This enzyme regulates the intracellular levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which are needed for the relaxation of smooth muscles in the corpus cavernosum and pulmonary arteries.
