(E)-N-Methyl-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-amine is an amine that is oxidized by cytochrome P450 enzymes. It is a minor product in the synthesis of squalene, which is a precursor to cholesterol. (E)-N-Methyl-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-amine has been shown to inhibit the growth of fungi and other infectious organisms, including bacteria. This chemical also inhibits mitochondrial protein biosynthesis and may be involved in the development of some types of cancer. Research shows that this compound binds to at least one pharmacophore in order to produce its biochemical effects on mitochondria.
