1,3-Dimethyl-5-hydroxyuracil is a heterocyclic compound that has been shown to act as an antioxidant. It has been used to prepare methylated uracils and ethylated uracils, which are efficient alkylating agents for DNA and RNA. 1,3-Dimethyl-5-hydroxyuracil can be synthesized from chlorobenzene, a common industrial chemical. The yield of this reaction is high and the product is easy to isolate. This compound has also been found to have protonic properties due to its electron donating methyl group. 1,3-Dimethyl-5-hydroxyuracil has also been shown to have prototropic effects on the rate of reaction with alkynes.
