2,5-Dimebon is a chemical compound that can be used as a reagent or as an electrophilic alkylating agent. It is used in the synthesis of carbonyl derivatives, such as esters and amides. 2,5-Dimebon can also be used to functionalize alcohols with fluorine atoms.
2,5-Dimebon reacts with nucleophiles at the carbonyl carbon atom and is mediated by fluoride ion (F). The reaction takes place in two steps: first, 2,5-dimebon reacts with an alcohol ROH to form a vinyl ether intermediate and then this intermediate reacts with a nucleophile NHR to form an alkylated product.
