Clomeprop is a synthetic herbicide that inhibits the growth of plants by inhibiting mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase. This enzyme is required for cellular respiration, so clomeprop inhibits the production of ATP by mitochondria and therefore prevents plant growth. Clomeprop has shown to be active against bacterial strains, such as Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is also able to inhibit the growth of fungi such as Penicillium
chrysogenum. The synthesis process for clomeprop starts with picolinic acid and an alkynyl group. These two compounds are combined through a chemical process to form a carbonyl group. The carbonyl group is then converted into an activated form which can react with acetylene to produce an ethynyl group. This ethynyl group reacts with ammonia or amines to produce an amide or amine respectively. Finally, these compounds
