2,6-Dihydroxy-3,4-dimethylpyridine is a colorless solid that is used as a developer in the production of synthetic textile fibers and as a hair dye. It is oxidized by hydrogen peroxide to form 2,6-dihydroxy-3,4-dimethyoxybenzene (resorcinol) and hydrogen peroxide. 2,6-Dihydroxy-3,4-dimethylpyridine reacts with the oxidizing agent sodium perborate to produce hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide. This compound also reacts with hydrochloric acid or sodium carbonate to produce resorcinol. The compound can be decarboxylated to 3-amino-2-chloro-6methylphenol by heating it with potassium carbonate in an alkaline medium.
