Dioxindolyl-L-alanine is an amino acid that is synthesized by the hydroxylation of L-serine, catalyzed by serine hydroxymethyltransferase. The product then undergoes a series of conformational changes and is converted to the final product, dioxindolyl-L-alanine. This amino acid can be found in a number of different organisms and it has been shown to have a role in mutagenesis, as well as the biosynthesis of serotonin. Dioxindolyl-L-alanine has been shown to rotate freely about its C4 axis, which may be due to steric effects or conformational changes. This amino acid's conformation also defines its reactivity with other molecules.
