Ruthenium(II) chloride is a chemical compound with the molecular formula RuCl2. It is a dark-red crystalline solid that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against liver cells and also exhibits antitumor effects. Ruthenium(II) chloride is used in the manufacture of ruthenium complexes, which are used in optical devices, such as lasers and LEDs, as well as in chemical sensing systems. The metal exhibits sequence specificity, binding preferentially to purines (adenine and guanine). Ruthenium(II) chloride binds to fatty acids through a weak interaction between the metal's d orbitals and the molecule's π electrons. This interaction gives ruthenium(II) chloride its red color.
