The compound 5E-2-Mercapto-5-(2-nitrobenzylidene)-1,3-thiazol-4(5H)-one is a potent inhibitor of influenza virus replication. It works by binding to the virus's surface protein hemagglutinin and prevents it from attaching to the host cell. This compound has been shown to be effective against all known subtypes of influenza A and B viruses, as well as against influenza C viruses. 5E-2-Mercapto-5-(2-nitrobenzylidene)-1,3-thiazol-4(5H)-one was found to be active in a number of animal models that are used for studying viral infection.
