8-Bromo-1,3,7-trimethyl-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione (8BrTMT) is a purine derivative that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. 8BrTMT has been shown to have an inhibitory activity against single stranded DNA and has been used as a probe for studying DNA replication. 8BrTMT does not bind to mammalian cells and is less toxic than other antibiotics such as erythromycin or tetracycline. It has also demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties through inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in animals.
