Nonyl(triphenyl)phosphonium bromide is used in diagnostic imaging as a positron emitter. It can be used to diagnose inflammatory diseases and heart disease by detecting the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid in the blood. Positron emission tomography (PET) scans are performed using a radionuclide that emits positrons, which are annihilated with electrons to produce gamma rays. The gamma rays are detected by a PET scanner and converted into an image of the distribution of the radionuclide within the body. Nonyl(triphenyl)phosphonium bromide is also used for asymmetric synthesis, where it is used as a catalyst for reactions involving carbonyl groups and divalent hydrocarbons such as alkynes or alkenes.
