2,3-Dioxo-7-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-6-nitro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxalinyl)acetic acid monohydrate is an ester of 2,3-dioxohexahydroquinoxaline with acetic acid. It has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in humans suffering from degenerative diseases. The drug has been shown to inhibit the uptake of neurotransmitters in the brain by blocking the organic anion transporters that allow these neurotransmitters to be taken up by cells. 2,3-Dioxohexahydroquinoxaline also blocks ATP channels and prevents neuronal depolarization. This drug may also reduce glomerular filtration rate and prevent renal dysfunction caused by diabetes mellitus.
