AR-42 is a non-radioactive compound that was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense for use as an incapacitating agent, but it has also been studied for use as a cancer drug. AR-42 increases the mitochondrial membrane potential in tumor cells and inhibits their growth in vitro. AR-42 has also been shown to inhibit leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), which suppresses the immune system and prevents the body from attacking tumors. AR-42 is metabolized into 2 molecules of carbon dioxide and one molecule of water, so it does not have any toxic effects on healthy cells.
