Methyl 4-(1H-indol-2-yl)benzoate is a new compound that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It has been shown to inhibit the multidrug efflux pump, which prevents the transport of toxic substances out of bacterial cells. Methyl 4-(1H-indol-2-yl)benzoate is chemically synthesised and is hypothesised to work as an antibacterial, inhibiting protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes in bacterial cells. Berberine, an antibacterial drug, is structurally similar to this molecule and may be used as a reference for further research.
