Remdesivir is an antiviral drug that inhibits the activity of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). This enzyme is a viral enzyme that replicates the viral genome. Remdesivir is a prodrug, which means it does not have antiviral activity until it is metabolized into its active form. The R-isomer of remdesivir has been shown to be more soluble in water than the S-isomer, and therefore may be more suitable for intravenous or oral administration. In vitro studies have demonstrated that remdesivir has significant inhibitory effects against viruses belonging to the coronavirus, flavivirus, filovirus, paramyxovirus and other virus families. In addition, this drug has been shown to inhibit the replication of HIV-1 and Hepatitis C virus in animal models.
