Phenylpropanamidine is a monomer that is used in the synthesis of polymers. It can be used as an antibacterial agent, but it has poor solubility in water and low biocidal activity. Phenylpropanamidine can be polymerized to form a hydrophobic gel with a particle size of less than 10 microns. The polymerization initiator for this process is azide, which reacts with the amine group on the phenylpropanamidine molecule to form an intermediate azine. This product has been shown to have good chemical bonding properties and a long shelf life due to its stability at high temperatures. Phenylpropanamidine is also synthesized by reacting vinyl alcohol with c6 alkyl chloride in the presence of an amide catalyst.
