Boc-5-chloro-DL-tryptophan is a chiral amino acid that can be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of tadalafil. It is an isomer of L-tryptophan, differing from it by the substitution of a carbonyl group for an amine group on the C5 position. This compound has been shown to have a high purity and to elute first in reversed phase liquid chromatography, making it suitable for use in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. The elution time and velocity can be adjusted by changing the parameters such as pH and solvent type. Boc-5-chloro-DL-tryptophan can also be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chiral drugs such as terazosin, alprenolol, and erythromycin A.
