Cobalt titanium oxide is a nanostructured material that has been synthesized by a sol-gel process. The synthesis of the material involves the reaction of sodium carbonate and titanium tetraisopropoxide in trifluoroacetic acid. The resulting product is an amorphous, porous, microporous structure with a particle size of less than 1 micrometre. Cobalt titanium oxide has excellent transport properties and as a result can be used in gas sensors. The material also exhibits light emission when stimulated by ultraviolet light, which makes it useful for photonic applications. Cobalt titanium oxide is insoluble in hydrochloric acid but reacts rapidly with redox potentials greater than -0.5 V. This reaction is catalyzed by citrate ions and proceeds through the following mechanism: CO3+ + 2H2O → HCO3- + CO2 + H+
