Gallium antimonide is an acceptor semiconductor with a strong ability to absorb infrared light. Gallium antimonide has been used for high-temperature, sensitive detection of hydrogen and other gases in the environment. It has also been used for the detection of radiation and for growth rate studies. The transport properties and hydrolysis behavior of gallium antimonide have been studied using deionized water and hydrochloric acid. Gallium antimonide can be grown as a single crystal or polycrystal with a hexagonal crystalline structure. The x-ray absorption spectrum of gallium antimonide shows strong transitions at 0.8 eV, 1.0 eV, 1.2 eV, and 1.4 eV due to its crystalline nature, while electron microscopy studies show that it reacts with chlorine gas to form gallium chloride as well as other products such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide when heated to higher temperatures.
