2-(Piperazin-1-yl)acetic acid (2PA) is a drug that has been shown to have an anti-obesity effect and to be effective in the treatment of bowel disease. It binds to the PPARα receptor, which is involved in lipid metabolism and inflammation. 2PA also inhibits inflammatory bowel disease by reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines. This drug has been used to treat cancer and heart disease; however, it has not been approved for these indications. 2PA is being developed as a potential treatment for diabetes due to its ability to inhibit the production of pyruvic transaminase (PT), an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate into acetyl coenzyme A, which can then be used for energy production. Clinical studies have shown that 2PA can reduce glycemia levels in diabetic patients.
