Bulgarsenine is a natural product that is an alkaloid. It is the major active constituent of the herb Celandine and has been found in other plants as well. Bulgarsenine has been used in analytical chemistry as a standard for HPLC analysis and can be used to make reference materials for quality control. Bulgarsenine has been isolated from plants and shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. It also inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division.
