(-)-p-Bromolevamisole oxalate is a cytosolic phosphatase that hydrolyzes the phosphate esters of neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, histamine and serotonin. The enzyme is localized to the plasma membrane of neurons and neurosecretory cells. It also has been demonstrated to be an inhibitor of neurotrophin release from cultured rat astrocytes. (-)-p-Bromolevamisole oxalate has been shown to inhibit the P2 receptor and enhance noradrenaline release from rat brain synaptosomes in vitro.
