3-Deoxy-D-manno-oct-2-ulosonic acid (3DMO) is a monosaccharide that is found in human serum. 3DMO has been shown to be a structural component of the glycosylation pattern of wild-type strains of Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica. It is one of the methyl glycosides that are found in the carbohydrate chemistry of these bacteria. The hydroxyl group in 3DMO can react with amines or amino groups on proteins, forming an amide linkage, which may be important for bacterial pathogenesis. In vitro assays have shown that mouse monoclonal antibodies against 3DMO are able to recognize human pathogens, including those from Group P2. The sample preparation for this assay involves isolating 3DMO from E. coli K12 cells and then incubating it with a mouse monoclonal antibody against 3DMO. Monoclonal
