1-O-Methyl-beta-D-xylopyranoside is a matrix component that is used as an artificial sweetener. This product has been shown to have the ability to protect cells against radiation and toxic chemicals. 1-O-Methyl-beta-D-xylopyranoside also inhibits the growth of coliform bacteria by inhibiting their energy metabolism and may be used for wastewater treatment. It has been shown to be effective in analytical methods to identify the presence of human feces in water samples.
