Methyl 5-cyano-4-methylpyridine-2-carboxylate is a potential drug candidate for the treatment of cystic fibrosis. It has been shown to be orally bioavailable and to bind to the f508del mutation site on the CFTR protein. Methyl 5-cyano-4-methylpyridine-2-carboxylate is a member of a novel class of drugs that modulate CFTR function by binding to its phenyl groups. This compound has pharmacologic activity in vitro and may have potential as a cystic fibrosis treatment due to its stepwise mechanism and hydrophobic nature.
