4,6-O-Ethylidene-±-D-glucopyranose is a transport inhibitor that binds to the active site of the membrane transporter, glut1. It has been found to inhibit the uptake of glucose, tryptophan, and dehydroascorbic acid by red blood cells. The binding of 4,6-O-ethylidene-±-D-glucopyranose to glut1 causes an increase in the kinetic rate of transport and a decrease in the asymmetry of transport. This molecule also inhibits the transport rate of glucose and other sugars into cells.
