Nifurpirinol is a sulfa-based drug that can be used to treat microbial infections, choroidal neovascularization and in vitro assays. It is an analog of sulfapyridine with a fluorine atom at the para position. Nifurpirinol has been shown to inhibit viruses from replicating by binding to their RNA and preventing translation. This drug also binds to proteins in the sample preparation process, which prevents the formation of aggregates that could lead to false results. Nifurpirinol has also been shown to have thermal expansion properties, which can be observed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
