Tricyclohexylphosphine oxide is a fluxional molecule that can be crystallized in the presence of additives such as methyl cinnamate. The crystal structure of tricyclohexylphosphine oxide has been determined by x-ray diffraction and shown to have a chloride ion coordinated in its cavity. This coordination site is active for electrophilic substitution reactions, such as metathesis reactions. Tricyclohexylphosphine oxide has been used as an additive to promote asymmetric catalysis of the Grignard reaction. It also has been shown to be an efficient catalyst for the conversion of methyl alcohol to methyl cinnamate in the presence of anions such as chloride or magnesium chloride.
