2,5-Dimethylbenzonitrile is a colorless liquid that has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies. It is used as an intermediate for the production of acrylonitrile, which is used in the manufacture of fibers, acrylic resins, and plastics. It also serves as a precursor to 4-ethylbenzonitrile and 2-methylphenol. The compound is not considered mutagenic or tumorigenic in vitro. The major use of 2,5-dimethylbenzonitrile is as an intermediate for the production of 4-ethylbenzonitrile and 2-methylphenol. The compound has been shown to induce respiratory control in rats and human lung fibroblasts. Noradrenaline levels were also found to be reduced when exposed to this compound.
