(R)-Benzyl (1-oxo-3-phenylpropan-2-yl)carbamate is a chiral, urea synthesis reagent that is used in the synthesis of l-tartaric acid. It can be prepared by reacting d-sorbitol with chloroacetonitrile and benzaldehyde in the presence of a base. The product crystallizes from water as an equilibrium mixture of two enantiomers. This product has shown to be efficient in the preparation of chiral compounds, such as L-DOPA, which are used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease.
