(-)-Emtricitabine triphosphate sodium salt is a novel antiviral drug that is used to treat HIV/AIDS. It is a deoxyribonucleoside analog of cytidine and is structurally related to lamivudine. It inhibits the synthesis of viral DNA by competitively inhibiting the activity of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme required for this process. Emtricitabine triphosphate sodium salt has been shown to be active against HIV-1, HIV-2, and other strains of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in laboratory studies. The drug does not appear to have any effect on normal cells because it does not cross the cell membrane.
Efforts are under way to develop an orally bioavailable form of emtricitabine triphosphate sodium salt as well as new prodrugs with improved properties.
